A Prayer for the New Year

Eternal Father, most gracious and ever-living God, I thank You with all my heart for the unspeakable gift of Jesus Christ our Lord through Whom I come to the throne of grace. In this new year I cannot but remember with deep gratitude Your faithfulness over the past year. I have known nothing, O Lord, but Your great goodness, sustenance, direction, provision and protection. Your glorious countenance shone on me last year; You upheld me, and You enabled me to see more and more of the great and incomparable beauty of Jesus Christ my Redeemer.

The Coronavirus: What is God saying to the Nation?

The passage presents the coronavirus pandemic as a call for nations to humble themselves before God and seek Him in prayer for deliverance. It emphasizes that believers have spiritual protection and peace through their relationship with God, even though they are not exempt from suffering in a fallen world. It argues that the Bible links national crises, including disease outbreaks, to a nation’s spiritual condition, viewing them as warnings to turn back to God in repentance. While acknowledging the need for medical care and practical precautions, it stresses that the primary response should be spiritual renewal. Jesus’ healing ministry is presented as a sign of His authority to forgive sins, with physical healing pointing to the deeper need for spiritual restoration.

Ruminating on God's Word, for the Christian, is indispensable for spiritual growth, maturity and success. The Psalmist knew this well - "Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day." Should we not also be able to say the same?

Meditating on God’s Word

How precious it is to meditate continually on the truths of God's Word. God, awesome and infinitely wise, commands us in Scripture to meditate on His holy Word. The picture of the righteous and successful man portrayed in Psalm 1 is of one who lovingly and diligently meditates on God's Word, day and night. God's Word is his treasure and unending delight. The result is beautiful. He is "like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper."
