A meditation on gratitude in Scripture

“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Reflection

Scripture is filled with thanksgiving and praise. From David to Paul,
from Hannah to Mary, God’s people continually responded with gratitude.

“In everything give thanks” is not conditional—it is a call to trust in God’s
sovereignty in all circumstances.

Thankfulness is a recognition of dependence on God, the giver of every good and perfect gift.

A thankful heart reflects faith, humility, and awareness of God’s unchanging goodness.

Why We Give Thanks

  • God’s goodness and mercy endure forever
  • Every breath is a gift from Him
  • Salvation through Jesus Christ
  • Provision, grace, and sustaining power

The Heart of Gratitude

  • Trust in God’s sovereignty
  • Joy in all circumstances
  • Faith over feelings
  • Worship in every season

Hymn — Charles Wesley

What shall I render to my God
For all His mercy’s store?

I’ll take the gifts He hath bestowed,
And humbly ask for more.

The sacred cup of saving grace
I will with thanks receive…

Offer the sacrifice of praise,
And call upon His name.

Praise Him, ye saints, the God of love,
Who hath my sins forgiven…

“In everything give thanks.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18
