Many in the world have made sundry resolutions for the New Year. Some will go to meticulous lengths to keep these in the hope of achieving desirable or worthy improvements to their lives. The only problem is that without Christ these resolutions are ultimately worthless. In the light of eternity, the only resolution or goal that counts is that which addresses and is hinged on the purpose for which we exist. If, as the Westminster Confession of Faith states, the ultimate goal of man is "to glorify God and enjoy Him forever" (Isaiah 43:7, 1 Corinthians 10:31, Psalm 73:25-26), then only the resolutions founded on the Truth are virtuous and valuable. Further, it is only through the enablement of the Spirit of Truth that worthy goals can be fulfilled. So all glory belongs to God.

By faith he [Abraham] dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution…?
(Romans 8:35)
Love your enemies, bless those who curse you,
and pray for those who persecute you.
(Matthew 5:44)
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Hear Him” A reflection on the Transfiguration and the call to obedience “While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Examine yourselves—whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified. (2 Corinthians 13:5)
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9–11)
He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone. (Revelation 21:7–8)
The Scriptures call believers to serious self-examination regarding the reality of their faith. Genuine faith is not only a profession of belief, but a life transformed by the grace of God through Jesus Christ. While salvation is by grace alone through faith alone, that grace does not leave a person unchanged; it produces repentance, holiness, and a new way of living.
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age… who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. (Titus 2:11–14)

Heavenly Father, thank you that You are most holy, most pure, most righteous and most merciful. Thank You that You have wonderfully ordained that Your children will be holy, and conformed to the likeness of our Blessed Redeemer and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Grant me, O Father, all grace to yield to the cleansing and purifying work of the Holy Spirit in my life. I ask that You continue Your gracious and precious work of sanctifying me by Your holy word. As I journey through this dark world, uphold me and keep from all compromise. Grant that I continually do Your will. May it be my food. I heartily desire to live a clean and righteous life as must all who belong to Christ having been called out and called up for the glory of Your most holy name, in Jesus name.
